AM0 (Air Mass 0) in Solar Energy

AM0 (Air Mass 0) refers to the solar spectrum outside the Earth’s atmosphere, where there is no atmospheric interference or absorption of solar radiation. It represents the sunlight’s spectrum as it would be received in space, with the sun directly overhead. This spectrum is particularly relevant for space applications, such as powering satellites and spacecraft, because it gives the most accurate representation of solar radiation in outer space.

The AM0 spectrum is often compared to AM1.5, which represents the solar spectrum as it passes through the Earth’s atmosphere at a 48.2-degree angle, a standard used for terrestrial solar power applications. The difference between these spectra accounts for the atmospheric absorption and scattering that occurs as sunlight travels through the Earth’s atmosphere.

AM0 is also known as the extraterrestrial solar spectrum. This term emphasizes that it represents the solar radiation outside the Earth’s atmosphere, typically used in the context of space applications.
